The TODO Comment You Left for "Future You"

We've all been there. It's Friday 4:55 PM, there's a production bug, and the "proper fix" needs 3 hours you don't have. So you ship the workaround with a cheerful TODO: fix this properly — and 8 weeks later, someone finds it rotting in the codebase with no ticket, no owner, and no idea what "properly" even means.

That TODO isn't documentation. It's a time bomb wrapped in optimism.

"A TODO without a ticket is a wish. A wish without a deadline is a memory leak — it takes up space until the system crashes."

Technical debt isn't bad code — it's good code in the wrong context. The difference between shipping and shipping sustainably isn't whether you take shortcuts, it's whether you pay the interest.

Today's move: Find one TODO from your past self. Either fix it or delete it. Future you will thank you — or at least not curse your name. 🛠️
