The Rewrite Temptation

🔥 DEV MOTIVATION — July 17, 2026

The Rewrite Temptation

You know the function. It's called processData() and it does four different things depending on what you pass in. It's 340 lines long, and you've been meaning to clean it up since March.

Today, you're touched by inspiration. What if you just rewrote it properly? Clean interfaces, single responsibility, tests, the whole dream. You open your editor, delete the file, and start fresh. It's beautiful. Elegant. Exactly what you always wanted it to be.

Then you remember the 47 places in the codebase that call it. And the one staging environment that breaks at 4:47 PM today. And the PR that won't be reviewed until Monday.

Here's the thing most senior engineers won't tell you: rewriting from scratch is the lazy choice. It feels productive — you're creating something beautiful — but it's actually avoiding the harder, more valuable work of understanding why the messy code exists, untangling real dependencies, and making surgical changes that don't break production.

The developer who ships incremental improvements on Wednesday is more heroic than the one who creates a perfect rewrite that sits in a branch until next quarter.

"The best refactor isn't the one that makes the code beautiful — it's the one that ships, survives review, and makes the next change a little easier than the last."

Resist the rewrite. Make the small fix. Ship the improvement. 🚀
