The "It Was Working Five Minutes Ago" Moment

You're on a roll. The feature is 90% done, the tests are green, and you just made one small change — really, just a tiny tweak. You renamed a variable from data to payload because the linter was complaining about shadowing. You did a global find-and-replace. Checked every hit. Twelve files. Twelve replacements. All clean.

You save. You run the server. It crashes with a NameError: name 'data' is not defined in a file you didn't even touch.

You stare at the screen. Five minutes ago, it was building. You didn't touch that file. You didn't touch any of its imports. You run it again — same

Here's the uncomfortable reality: code is a living system, not a static document. Every change you make ripples outward in directions you didn't anticipate. That data to payload rename wasn't just a string replacement — it was a disturbance in the ecosystem of your codebase. The auto-generated cache file was a parasite living in the build pipeline. The test failures were dormant, waiting for someone to shift enough gravity in the codebase to wake them up.

**This isn't a sign that you're

"Five minutes ago it was working. Five minutes from now, you'll understand why it stopped — and that understanding is worth more than the working code."
