The Error Message That Wasn't the Error

It's Thursday afternoon. Deployment fails: ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'celery'. You add it. Build fails again: ImportError from a circular dependency. Fix that. Now: TypeError: 'NoneType' is not subscriptable — a missing env var. Fix that. Now: ConnectionRefusedError — Redis wasn't started in staging.

It works. You spent 45 minutes and five deployments on a chain reaction started by one missing dependency.

The truth: The first error is almost never the only error. Modern software is layered — a missing dependency exposes a missing config, which exposes a missing service. You're not fixing five bugs. You're peeling five layers off one gap in the deployment chain.

The mindset shift: Treat the first error as the entry point into a diagnostic tree, not the whole problem. Test deployments on fresh environments once per sprint. Keep a DEPLOYMENT_AUTOPSY.md — log the first error, the chain, and the root cause. After ten entries, you'll see patterns. After twenty, you'll prevent them.

"The first error is the tip of the iceberg. The rest of the iceberg is your deployment process, and it's been trying to tell you something all along."
