The Day You Realized You're the Senior Dev Now

It's a Wednesday afternoon. Slack pings. A developer you barely know — someone who joined four months ago — messages: "Hey, I'm stuck on this integration. Do you know how the legacy service handles token refresh?"

Nobody else on the team is going to answer. You're not the most senior by title, but everyone knows the legacy auth service was your pet project. You're the walking documentation.

And in that moment, it hits you. You're not the junior developer who needs hand-holding anymore. You're the person who provides it.

Here's what nobody tells you about becoming senior: it doesn't feel like a promotion. It feels like responsibility you didn't ask for.

You didn't apply to be the person everyone turns to at 3 PM on a Friday. You didn't raise your hand to become the living wiki for the undocumented parts of the codebase. You just kept answering questions, fixing bugs, and leaving helpful comments — until one day you realized you were the one who knew how things worked.

You became senior not because of what you know, but because of what you're willing to share.

"You didn't become senior because of a title change. You became senior the day someone you don't even know asked for your help — and you had it."
