Daily Dev Motivation — June 25, 2026The Bug You Caused (And the One That Wasn't Yours)It's 3 PM on a Thursday. The monitoring dashboard is screaming red. A critical API endpoint is returning 500s. The on-call isn't yours — but the code that broke? That was your PR from three weeks ago.
"Ah, this is from @your_name's PR."
That bug didn't make you a bad developer. It made you a human one.
Every senior engineer has a graveyard of bugs they introduced. Every "rockstar" has caused an outage. The difference between juniors and seniors isn't that seniors don't break things — it's that they move faster from
"oh no" to
"here's the fix" to
"here's the test so it never happens again."Your job right now:1.
Fix the immediate problem. Roll back. Hotfix. Ship the stopgap.
2.
Own it without drama. "I introduced this. Here's the fix. Here's what we need so it doesn't come back."3.
Add the guardrail. The test, the assertion, the null check.
Stop thinking:
"I broke production. I'm a liability."Start thinking:
"Production found a gap in my understanding. Now I'm patched.""A bug in production is just your codebase asking for a deeper understanding. Answer the question."
