Daily Dev Motivation — July 5, 2026The Branch That Worked on Your MachineIt's 2 PM. You pushed
feature/auth-migration. Locally: 247 tests pass, linter silent, integration suite ran in 4:12. Green across the board. You close your laptop for your walk.
You come back to CI.
Red. Twelve tests failed — not on your code, but on payment, notifications, user preferences. Tests passing since March.
Your machine: PostgreSQL 16.3, UTC timezone. CI: PostgreSQL 16.2, system timezone from a Docker image baked months ago.
The uncomfortable truth: It will keep happening. Not because you're careless — because "it works on my machine" is a
coordinate system, not a bug report.
The mindset shift:Stop asking:
"Why did it pass locally but fail in CI?"Start asking:
"What am I assuming about the environment that CI doesn't know?"The practice that separates good from great: Run your full test suite in a clean environment before pushing. A fresh Docker container. A disposable VM. Something that doesn't know you. Something that has no reason to be nice to you.
"Your dev machine loves you. It's biased in your favor. Ship code that survives meeting strangers."
