Dev Motivation — July 18, 2026Ship It Monday, Fix It TuesdayIt's Friday, 4:38 PM. The feature mostly works. There's that one error message that says 'Something went wrong' instead of something helpful. You push anyway, telling yourself you'll fix the rough edges Monday.
Monday comes. Twelve Slack messages. Four hours of polishing what you could've polished Friday morning.
The quality of the Monday experience is decided on Friday at 4:30 PM.
The truth: Friday deploys aren't caused by bad discipline. They're caused by a system that rewards shipping over shipping well. That 'small thing' isn't small to the person who encounters it Monday at 8:02 AM.
The fix:- Define 'done' before you code — done means 'I can hand this to a real user and feel no shame'
- The last 20% takes 80% of the time — and that's where reputation lives
- After 3 PM on ship day, stop writing new logic. Read through as a user. Break it yourself. Then ship.
'The difference between shipping on Friday and Monday isn't the code — it's the thirty minutes of polish that separates works from works and feels finished.'
