Legacy Code Is Someone Else's Feature

🧠 DEV MOTIVATION — July 13, 2026

Legacy Code Is Someone Else's Feature

You open a file and it hits you: OrderProcessorUtilityHelperManager. Written 14 months ago by a dev who left. Comment says: // DO NOT TOUCH THIS. There's a 47-line method called doStuff() that touches 6 tables, a cache, and an API you can't find docs for.

Your instinct: delete it all and start clean.

Your better instinct: breathe.

That dev wasn't incompetent — they were solving a problem you don't see: the midnight launch, the customer escalation, the deadline nobody talked about. They made trade-offs in fire. You're reading the ashes.

Every legacy codebase is a time capsule of good intentions and hard constraints. Don't rewrite what you don't understand. Improve what you touch. Leave every file slightly better than you found it.

"The cleanest code is the code someone else can understand without asking you to come back from vacation."

💪 Ship something good today. The future you will thank you.
