Anthropic Launches Claude Sonnet 5 — Most Agentic Sonnet Yet, Near-Opus Quality

Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5 on June 30 with substantial improvements over Sonnet 4.6 in reasoning, tool use, and coding.

Key details:

• 63.2% SWE-bench Verified (vs Opus 4.8 at 69.2%) — only a 6-point gap


• 5–7x cheaper than Opus while delivering comparable results on coding tasks


• 1M token context window — same as Opus, full-repo reasoning in one prompt


• Default model for all tiers — Free, Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise all upgraded automatically


• Available everywhere — Claude Code, API, Bedrock, GCP, Azure, Cursor

Why it matters:

• Agentic coding workflows (auto bug-fixes, multi-file refactoring) that required Opus pricing now work at Sonnet cost


• Existing Claude Code / API users got the upgrade with zero config change


• Cost per automated fix drops from ~$2–5 (Opus) to ~$0.30–0.80 (Sonnet 5)

Use case: Point Claude Code at a 500-file Python backend, feed it a GitHub issue, and Sonnet 5 identifies the bug, writes the fix, generates a test, and stages a commit — all autonomously at a fraction of Opus cost.
